I’m Miah.

ABOUT

I’ve spent fifteen years learning how to be in the room without changing it.

Filmmaker, cinematographer, and editor based in Haʻikū, Maui. I make documentary shorts, brand campaigns, and event films — mostly for people whose worlds I've spent real time inside.

Miah Idema, filmmaker and founder of Lawn Chair Creative

How I got here

I learned to make films while traveling Central America in my early twenties. That year taught me that a camera is currency — it gets you inside homes, conversations and lives you'd never reach on your own. I came home knowing the work was about showing up for people with something to say.

From there I taught production to college-age students, then moved to Los Angeles to learn under established directors. That work put me on the road: a documentary crossing America at twenty-five miles an hour, Chris Stapleton's second album tour, a cologne commercial shot wrapped in a giant yellow python.

Then ten years with Wilderness Collective — not as a vendor, but leading the trips. Riding, guiding and filming motorcycle expeditions through Yosemite, Death Valley, Baja and the Grand Canyon. Alongside it, I built Amigo Studios, a film and photo studio in Oceanside.

Fifteen years in, the craft comes down to a few things: curiosity for a good story, an eye for the real moment, and understanding what a client is trying to say before the first shot.

Now I'm home in Haʻikū, on Maui — available for local hire here, and still on a plane whenever the right project calls.

IN THEIR WORDS

What it’s like to work with me

“What makes Miah exceptional isn’t just that he is an outstanding videographer, editor, and photographer. It is his ability to connect with people and earn their trust. I’ve watched him interview kindergarten students, school leaders, board members, and internationally recognized public figures with the same genuine curiosity and respect.”

“What impressed me most was his ability to understand that Green Communities is about much more than what we do — it’s about why we do it. It never felt like we were simply making another promotional video. He captured the emotion behind our work and helped people see the love we have for the environment, the communities, and the people who are part of Green Communities.”

HOW I WORK

Three things clients tend to notice

01

I ask what it's for

Before anything is shot I want to know what the film has to accomplish — inspire giving, strengthen a community, explain something a brochure can't. Then every interview, shot, and edit gets built around that. A beautiful film that doesn't do the job is a failed film.

02

People relax around me

Most of my job is making someone comfortable enough to forget I'm there. I've done it with kindergarteners and with Al Gore, and the method is the same — show up curious, stay longer than you need to, don't rush the part where nothing is happening.

03

You don't see the complexity

Comms teams, PR approvals, schedules that change the morning of. That's normal on the events I shoot, and managing it is part of the work — not something to hand back to you. Your job is the event. Mine is everything the camera needs.

Let’s talk about your story

The best projects I've worked on started as a conversation about what someone was trying to say, not a request for a quote.
