THE BRIEF

A tournament on the boardwalk, built for the feed.

Crush Palace built Cutwater a tournament on the Venice Beach courts: branded fencing along the boardwalk, a VIP clubhouse for Gopuff, a DJ, a kissing booth and a $2,500 grand prize.

They asked for 50 edited photos and a 60-second highlight film. Twenty of the photos had to be ready by 3pm, so partners could post while play was still going.

THE IDEA

An event lasts a day. The feed is where it lives.

So the deadline wasn’t the final whistle. It was 3pm.

HOW IT RAN

Built around the handoffs, not the shoot.

01

Work across the street

Partners wanted to post while the tournament was still on. So the photo edit happened in a hotel room across the street, not back at the studio. The first 20 selects went into a shared Drive by 3pm.

03

Treat notes as part of the schedule

The first cut went to the agency at 3pm on Monday, and notes came back within half an hour. The finished films were uploaded before 5. The version with Crush Palace’s logo on the final frame followed the next day.

02

Grade it like their feed

The color followed Crush Palace’s own Instagram. We laid an old-film look over the top and left the greens in rather than correcting them out, so the film felt sun-faded and a little vintage.

WHY LIVE COVERAGE IS ITS OWN JOB

Most event content shows up after everyone’s gone home.

By the time a typical recap lands, the tournament is over and the attention has moved on. This one was built around a 3pm photo drop and a Monday film. The content arrived while people were still talking about the day.

That took a small crew that could shoot and deliver at the same time, a base camp across the street, and an edit that planned for notes.
